Problem
BlockTree uses blockchain and NFTs to make reforestation transparent, but most of its sponsors and workers had never touched crypto. The project was entering Phase 2 with an MVP already in users’ hands, and needed to scale three surfaces at once: the brand, the sponsor website and the app for field workers. Constraints: two weeks, a team of four, and public accountability to the community that funds it.
Design decisions
Brand first, with field research running in parallel, so all three surfaces share one design language. The app was built alongside development, so the IA was locked before any UI was drawn. The turning point came from the field in Núi Thành: workers wear gloves all day, and they stop using the phone rather than take the gloves off. The app was redesigned around two sessions, taking on tasks and reporting back, optimized for gloved hands and end-of-day light.
Results
40 workers use the app daily; 500+ trees verified by GPS, photo and timestamp and minted as NFTs on Cardano. An additional USD 5,000 in corporate sponsorship (10,000 mangrove trees) and 2 organizations onboarded. 5/5 milestones met and the full USD 37,800 disbursed, publicly verifiable on-chain #900041.
